Mythical Creatures by Oliver

My family and I have been traveling Greece for the past couple of weeks and we have spent some time learning about Greek gods, goddesses, and monsters. There were 14 gods and goddesses but no more than 12 lived at one time. There were also Monsters that tried to kill gods and goddesses. In this post you will learn about some of my favorite Greek mythical creatures.

My favorite Greek goddess is Artemis. She is the goddess of hunting, wild animals, wilderness, and childbirth. Her Roman equivalent was named Diana. She is the daughter of the Greek god Zeus and goddess Leto. She had a twin brother named Apollo who was a god as well. Artemis’s symbols were hunting dogs, stags, and a bow and arrows. She spent a lot of time in forests and woods either hunting or enjoying the wilderness. The deer and cypress tree were sacred to her.

One of the most powerful and well known gods is Zeus. Zeus was the sky, thunder, and lightning god. He ruled as king of all the gods and goddesses. He married a goddess named Leto and had twins named Artemis and Apollo and both twins were deities. Zeus’s special power was shooting lightning bolts. As a child he was raised deep in a cave because his father would swallow every child he had but Zeus’s mother raised him in a cave to hide Zeus from his scary father. Whenever he cried dancers would cheer him up so his father wouldn’t hear him. Outside the cave dancers, lions, and man bulls were guarding the cave.

One type of ancient Greek monster was a Cyclops. They were one eyed monsters that can hurt goddesses and gods. Some Cyclops served as builders, craftsmen, and blacksmiths. One day a god named Odysseus came with his men and shoved a spear up its one eye while it was sleeping. It screamed and when it woke up it was blind. Eventually the spear killed him.

As I traveled through the homeland of the gods, goddesses, and monsters, I’ve learned a lot about them and I’ve decided to write about them in this blog. There are many more mythical creatures and they are so interesting because each one has different powers which are very cool.
